This beautiful home was finished in fall 2010. Owners Roy Schuster and Mary-Chris Jaklevic moved from Chicago and wanted to build a "durable family home that complements traditional neighborhood architecture while minimizing the carbon footprint for decades to come" (Mary-Chris). They were introduced to the concept of passive houses when the design was a more typical "green home", using geothermal heat pump and 2pane windows.
CTI worked closely with the architect Tom Bassett-Dilley of Oak Park, IL to design a thermal bridge free, superinsulated envelope, and improve the passive structure as a whole. In return, we eliminated the need for a geothermal heat pump. By putting more money into walls and windows and less into mechanical systems we kept the overall project cost about the same.
Other sustainable features: Energy-efficient appliances, recycled glass tile, locally soured lumber; recycled/recyclable tile and carpet materials; dual flush toilets; WaterSense faucets; eco-friendly landscaping
